The Poisoned Waters of Yamuna

In the sacred city of Vrindavan, the river Yamuna was the lifeline of the land—its waters nurtured the people, the fields, and the animals. But deep in those waters lurked Kaliya, a fierce and venomous serpent who had made the river his home. Kaliya’s venom was so potent that the river turned dark and deadly, and nothing could survive its poison.

The people of Vrindavan lived in constant fear of the serpent’s wrath. The once-lush riverbanks had become a place of death, and no one dared to approach the Yamuna.

Krishna’s Leap into the Poisoned River

One day, as young Krishna was playing by the river with His friends, He saw how the river had been poisoned by Kaliya. Without a moment’s hesitation, Krishna decided to confront the serpent and restore life to Yamuna’s waters.

He climbed a tall Kadamba tree and, with a graceful leap, dived into the swirling, venomous waters. The moment Kaliya saw Krishna, he coiled around Him, hoping to crush the life out of the young boy.

But Krishna, the Supreme Lord in human form, remained calm and unafraid. With His divine power, He broke free from Kaliya’s coils and began to dance—yes, dance!—on the serpent’s many hoods.

The Divine Dance: Triumph of Good over Evil

As Krishna danced on Kaliya’s heads, His feet pressed down on the serpent’s pride and poison. Kaliya, overwhelmed by Krishna’s divine grace and power, began to realize the futility of his evil ways. The river, once blackened by his venom, shimmered back to life, cleansed by Krishna’s presence.

Kaliya’s wives, filled with devotion and fear, pleaded with Krishna to spare their husband. Seeing their sincere prayers and Kaliya’s surrender, Krishna forgave the serpent and commanded him to leave the Yamuna and find a new home in the ocean.

The Essence of the Story

🌸 Light overcomes darkness. Krishna’s dance on Kaliya’s heads symbolizes how divine light can conquer even the most venomous of hearts.

🌸 Pride and arrogance must be humbled. Kaliya’s defeat was not just physical—it was the taming of his poisonous pride.

🌸 Compassion even for the wicked. Despite Kaliya’s cruelty, Krishna’s grace forgave him when he surrendered.

🌸 Nature’s harmony restored. By cleansing the Yamuna, Krishna restored life and balance to Vrindavan.
